JJ Ferguson, lise aşkı Ava'yı bulup evlenmek ve hayalini kurduğu yuvayı inşa etmek için Pinewood, Kuzey Carolina'ya döner. Ama bir zamanlar iyi tanıdığı ve sevdiği insanları, çok değişmiş bulur. Bu adeta Muhteşem Catsby'nin güneyli edebiyatıyla yeniden kurgulanması gibi. Küçük bir kasabada hayatlarını idame ettirmeye çalışan büyük bir afrikalı amerikan ailenin hikayesi.
