Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: http://www.publishersweekly.com/images/star3.gif“Full of heart and replete with challenging ciphers for readers to decode, Bertman’s debut is literary cousin to classic puzzlers likeThe Westing Game, and a story that values books and reading above other pursuits. Sure to be popular with voracious readers, it’s also a valentine to anybody who knows that a 13-digit clue that begins with 978- is not a phone number.”—Publishers Weekly, STARRED REVIEW

THE BOOK SCAVENGER by Jennifer Chambliss Bertman
Henry Holt Books for Young Readers
June 2015; 9781627791151; 5 ½ x 8 ¼;  368 pp.; Ages 8 - 12

For twelve-year-old Emily, the best thing about moving to San Francisco is that it's the home city of her literary idol: Garrison Griswold, book publisher and creator of the online sensation Book Scavenger (a game where books are hidden in cities all over the country and clues to find them are revealed through puzzles). Upon arriving, however, Emily learns that Griswold has been attacked, and no one knows anything about the epic new game he had been poised to launch. Then Emily and her new friend James discover an odd book, which they come to believe is from Griswold himself. Racing against time, Emily and James try to uncover the secret at the heart of Griswold's new game—before Griswold's attackers find them.

Advance Praise:

“Book Scavenger is the book I dreamed of when I was young. Adventure! Ciphers! Hidden treasure! And it’s all for the love and celebration of books! This book nerd couldn’t put it down, and you won’t be able to, either.” —K. A. Holt, author ofRhyme Schemer and House Arrest

“Bertman’s debut novel establishes her as a major new voice in middle grade fiction. Prediction: Book Scavenger will become a beloved classic in the mode of The Westing Game and The Egypt Game. It’s off the charts wonderful.” —Claudia Mills, author of Zero Tolerance and Kelsey Green, Reading Queen

“Book Scavenger is that flashlight-under-the-bedcovers book that would have gotten me into serious trouble when I was a kid. How can so much fun and excitement be packed into these pages? Let’s all clamor for Book Scavenger to be real!”  Jody Feldman, author of The Gollywhopper Games

THE BOOK SCAVENGER #2, by Jennifer Chambliss Bertman
Henry Holt Books for Young Readers
June 2016; 9781627791168; 5 ½ x 8 ¼;  368 pp.; Ages 8 - 12

Now that Emily's family has decided to settle in San Francisco, she's looking forward to a normal life without the looming threat of change. But soon enough financial pressures weigh on her parents, and Emily worries that their good intentions might not be enough to keep the family from moving again.

Meanwhile, Emily and James's teacher Mr. Quisling is up to something mysterious. First, there's the scrap of map he leaves at a book event. Then she and James discover their teacher has been receiving encrypted messages in a series of Mark Twain books hidden through Book Scavenger. When Emily and James decipher the messages, they begin to suspect Mr. Quisling is hunting a long-rumored treasure of buried gold. Intrigued by this prospect and what it could mean for her family's financial struggles, Emily and James set out to best their teacher.

But when they research Mark Twain and the Gold Rush era, they learn about a serial arsonist from the 1800s who called himself The Lightkeeper, and the seemingly unrelated string of arson fires around San Francisco suddenly seem more ominous. Especially when they realize the fires have been set in the exact same locations as where Mr. Quisling found the Mark Twain books. Is a copycat Lightkeeper trying to stop Mr. Quisling? Or could Mr. Quisling, himself, be the arsonist?

By the time Emily and James uncover the answers, much more is at stake than whether or not Emily will have to move again.

Jennifer Chambliss Bertman was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. She holds an MFA in creative writing and has worked for literary agencies, magazines, educational publishers, and as a freelance copyeditor and proofreader. The Book Scavenger is her debut novel.
